Nakagawa Somekojo Co., Ltd.

We moisten the stencils and prepare the printing board (itaba).
This is the process of applying the stencils onto the printing board (itaba).
This is the dyeing process (kon’ya no some). We create temporary dykes (tsuchi-dote) to separate the colors precisely, then pour the dye from above.
This is the “mizumoto” (rinsing) process. We wash off the paste resist and any excess dye from the fabric.
We are washing the tanmono (fabric bolts) in a long water tank.
We climb onto a high drying rack structure and hang the fabric down to dry.

Company Introduction We are a dye house in Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture, specializing in dyeing yukata (light cotton kimono) and tenugui (Japanese hand towels) using a traditional technique called “chusen” (注染). We perform dyeing and processing for various items including yukata, tenugui, noren (split curtains), hanten (short winter coats), and custom-named towels. We are one of the few companies left in Japan that possesses the advanced skills to dye authentic yukata, ensuring that the traditional craft of “Miya-zome” (宮染め) is inherited and continues without interruption.
